“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
